What Should I Include in a Pet First Aid Kit?

Your pet is a member of your family, and just as you have a first aid kit handy for all human members, you should have one for your pet, too. A pet first aid kit can be an enhanced version of your kit, or you can purchase one already "put together" from a pet store. Keep Doggie Safe carries a selection of first aid products perfect for inclusion in a pet first aid kit.

What to Include

If you prefer to make your own first aid kit for your pooch, here's a list of things that should be included:

Basic Supplies

  • Gauze pads
  • Medical tape
  • Antiseptic
  • Small blanket
  • Q-tips/Cotton balls
  • Roll of gauze
  • Hydrogen peroxide (induces vomiting - only use if directed by a vet or poison control)
  • Ice pack
  • Rubber gloves
  • Vaseline (to lubricate a thermometer)
  • Rectal thermometer (a temperature between 100º-103ºF is perfect)
  • Scissors
  • Sterile saline solution
  • Tweezers
  • A pillowcase (helps confine a cat in emergencies)
  • Pet carrier

Additional Supplies

These additional supplies are not always necessary, but they can be useful in certain situations.
  • Benadryl - for allergic reactions - ask your vet about proper dosage
  • Ear cleaning solution
  • Glucose paste (for diabetic dogs)
  • Nail clippers
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Small flashlight
  • Eye dropper/syringe
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Splints/tongue depressors
  • Styptic powder
  • Extra ID tags
  • Towels
  • Needle-nosed pliers
  • Nylon leash
  • Muzzle
In addition to the supplies listed above, it's important that your pet's first aid kit contain his medical records, emergency contact information, and the number to a poison control center or hotline. It can sometimes be difficult to remember all this information in the event of an emergency, so keep all this information handy. Be sure to check your pet first aid kit periodically and replace any supplies that have expired. As with all medical supplies and medication, keep the kit out of reach of children and pets.
